ProductCon SF: building is cheap, judgment is scarce
Product School's October 7 conference kept landing on one point: AI made building cheap, so judgment, taste, staying close to customers and shipping yourself are the scarce skills. Webflow's CPO described going from "Builder Days" to a weekly "Builder Wednesday" and getting everyone in product, design and engineering shipping to production.
PMs are trading PRDs for prototypes
More product leaders say a working prototype now does the job a requirements doc used to, because people react to something they can click far better than to a page of text.
"Builder PM" shows up in job posts
Some roles now ask PMs to turn a problem into something tangible before design or engineering get involved, naming Claude, Cursor, Lovable and v0. It's anecdotal so far: we found no hiring data that measures it.
Most PMs use AI coding tools. Few say it changed strategy
In a Product Circle survey cited by Allstacks, 87.7% of respondents use AI coding assistants, but only 17.5% said AI made a real difference to strategic planning and roadmapping.
The pushback: builder PMs can ship bad decisions faster
A counterpoint worth reading: putting output ahead of outcomes just gets the wrong thing out sooner. Building is a skill, not a strategy.
What it means for you: learn to build, but spend the time you save on deciding what's worth building.
